How We Help

Our Story

Forged in service and sacrifice, Legacy began with a promise to make a meaningful difference for the families of those who served, now and into the future.

Legacy Australia was founded in 1923 by Sir Stanley Savige and a small group of returned servicemen in Melbourne, driven by what they had seen, and what they couldn’t ignore.

In the aftermath of the First World War, too many families were left to navigate life alone. Legacy began with a simple but powerful commitment they would never be left to face life’s challenges alone. Through a simple, yet powerful promise, to look after the “missus and the kids.”

What started as an act of mateship became a national movement. Communities across Australia stepped forward, united by a shared belief, that honouring service means caring for the families who carry its cost.

On 14 February 1928, that promise took hold locally with the formation of the Legacy Club of South Australia and Broken Hill at Balfours Café on Rundle Street. Built on the same enduring values of service, compassion and community, it marked the beginning of a lasting difference for families across South Australia and Broken Hill.

The Legacy Torch has long stood as a symbol of sacrifice, an eternal flame honouring those who gave their lives in service. Its inverted laurel wreath reflects remembrance, respect, and a sacrifice that can never be forgotten.
But the flame does not stand still. Today, it also lights the way forward, igniting action and inspiring us to keep making a difference in the lives of families for generations to come.
